Continuing from Big Data – Part 1: Big What? where I explored what the concept of Big Data is and the possibilities it presents, I now want to to consider the constituent parts which together make up Big Data. I also want to look at some of the key vendors and products on the market which are enabling Big Data analytics.
I thought that rather than writing a long, rambling post it might be nice to put this together into a mind map (I used the free desktop version of iMindMap). For anyone interested, a quick Google search will provide you with plenty of resources.
Big Data Landscape Mind Map
This map will no doubt go out of date very quickly – and it’s only intended to give a flavor of what’s out there. If you think I’ve missed any important ones, let me know! I’d also love to hear from anyone using these technologies – or others – about your experiences with them.

Useful Resources
Some resources which I found useful were when creating this mind map are:
- The Big Data Cookbook
- What is Big Data
- Hadoop distributions list
- Big Data means Advanced Data Visualization
Notes:
- I included WebGL and OpenGL in the ADV section for those who want to roll their own graphics
- I included R programming language in Query & Data Analytics because it is so useful for “Data Scientists”
